The age of the youngest player is 25 years

GIVEN

The average age of 6 players is 40. If there difference between the oldest 5 players is 5 and the youngest player is 8 less than the second youngest.

TO FIND

Age of the youngest player.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is given,

Average age of 6 players = 140.

We know that,

Sum of age of players/Number of players = 40

Sum of age = 40 × 6 =240

It is given that youngest player is 8 less than the second youngest.

Let the age of the youngest player be x years

Age of second youngest player = x + 8

Age of third youngest player = x+8 + 5 = x+13 years

Age of fourth youngest player = x+13 + 5 = x+18 years

Age of fifth youngest player = x+18+5 = x+23

Age of the oldest player = x+23 +5 = x+23 years

Now,

x+x+8+x+13+x+18+x+23+x+28 = 240

6x + 90 = 240

6x = 240-90

6x = 150

x = 25 years

Hence, The age of the youngest player is 25 years
