Given is the mean of twelve numbers, Find the mean if each number is doubled.

Explanation:

  • The average value is also known as the arithmetic mean.
  • The mathematical value of the mean is given by dividing the sum of all  the observations by the total number of observations, \bar x=\frac{\sum x}{N}
  • Let the twelve numbers be denoted by a_1,a_2,....a_{12}.
  • Hence, the mean of these numbers is, ->\frac{a_1+a_2+....a_{12}}{12}=8
  • Now when each of these numbers is double the new mean is given by, \bar x'=\frac{2a_1+2a_2+...2a_{12}}{12} \\->\bar x'=2(\frac{a_1+a_2+....a_{12}}{12}) \\->\bar x'=2(8)\\->\bar x'=16
  • Hence, when the numbers are doubled their mean is also doubled and is equal to 16.
