The average of three numbers is 42. The Difference between the largest and smallest number is 63.

Solution:

Given that average of three numbers = 42

Let’s assume third number = x

Since second is twice the third, so second number = 2x

Since first is twice the second, so third number = 2(2x) = 4x

Average = sum of three numbers divided by 3

42 = \frac{x + 2x + 4x}{3}

\frac{(42 \times 3)}{6} = x

x = 21

Largest number = 4x and smallest number = x

Difference = 4 x – x = 3 x = 3 x 21 = 63

Hence difference between the largest and smallest number is 63.
