the average oxidation number of N in NH4NO3 with explanation

5
Answer: +5
Explanation: To find oxidation no of NH4NO3 you first have to break it into ion and find the oxidation no of N of both ions and it is going to be different for both N.
We have to break them into ion because NH4N03 is an ionic compound
When we break this into ion we will see NH4^+ And NO3^-
For NH4^+ Oxidation state =+1
N+4H=+1
N+4(+1)=+1 ….(O.N of H =+1)
N+4=+1
N=-3
For NO3^- Oxidation state =-1
N+3(O)=-1
N+3(-2)=-1 …(O.N for O=-2)
N-6=-1
N=-1+6
N=+5
Therefore Oxidation number for N in NH4NO3 is -3 and +5
