let total distance be 'd'

given d/2 is travelled by speed  v1 and d/2 with v2

hence average speed =  d/(d/2v1+d/2v2)                       since t=d/v

                                       =4v1v2/2(v1+v2)

                                         =2v1v2/v1+v2
