Lord Curzon thought it is foolish to keep such a big area under single province and hence he decided to partition Bengal. The eastern half was named “Eastern Bengal and Assam” with capital Dacca and western half contained Bihar and Orissa with capital Calcutta

Background of Partition of Bengal

  • Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India announced the Partition of Bengal on 19 July 1905. The British Government gave the reasons of administrative efficiency. Bengal Presidency comprised of Bengal, Bihar. parts of Jharkhand ,Assam and Orissa.
  • Since its a very large territory it is very difficult to administer. But the real motive of the British Government was to divide the Hindus and the Muslims. They followed the Policy of"Divide and Rule".
