Let altitude of the triangle be x cm
Let the base be x+4 cm

Area of triangle =1/2*b*h
48 = 1/2*x*x+4
96 = x^2+4x
x^2+4x-96= 0
x^2+12x-8x-96=0
x(x+12)-8(x+12)=0
(x-8)(x+12)=0

x-8=0,x+12=O
(x=8=altitude of triangle and 12cm = base of triangle)
