The algebraic equation is as follows; Total sales = 4.50x + 3.25y

GIVEN

The baseball concession stand sells soft pretzels for $4.50 and bags of popcorn $3.25.

TO FIND

Write an equation to represent the total sales form pretzels and popcorn on a given day.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

Let us assume the number of pretzels sold in a day = x

Let the number of bags of popcorn sold in a day = y

Now,

Cost of 1 pretzels = $4.50

Cost of x pretzels = 4.50 × x = $4.50x

Cost of 1 bag of popcorn = $3.25

Cost of y bags of popcorn = 3.25 × y = $3.25y

Therefore,

The total sales = cost of x pretzels + cost of bags of popcorn

Total sales = 4.50x + 3.25y

Hence, The algebraic equation is as follows; Total sales = 4.50x + 3.25y
