Yes this fact is indeed true. The best way to thank an illiterate is to make him literate. Once he is literate he is independent can look up and help himself and is not a burden with others . He learns new values , morals and cultures . Making an illiterate into literate matches with the saying that it is better to teach a man how to fish rather than to give him a fish .
In reference to the story ' How I taught my grandmother to read ' just reveals this fact. As the granddaughter teachers her grandmother to read she could read the novel of kashi yaatre or any other entire novel on her own . She never felt dependent on her granddaughter then onwards.
