The Stolen Bacillus is a science fictional short story written by the English author H.G.Wells. A bacteriologist shows a visitor the cholera bacillus he is examining under the microscope and also tells him how people across a vast area could be affected if the bacillus is released from a bottle where he has stored it. He even shows the man the bottle. Soon his wife calls him away for a while. On his return, the scientist realises the stranger has left and, soon after, sees the bottle missing. He and his wife soon give chase to the anarchist in two separate cabs. When they catch up with the stranger, the man swallows the contents of the bottle. Suddenly the scientist realises the stolen bottle is not the one containing the cholera bacillus.
Similar to the story of Wells, it is today a big worry for civilised people around the world what disaster would have to be gone through if the small pox or other viruses fell into the hands of terrorists or anti-social elements of society. The rogues could kill or maim huge numbers of people by stealing the specimens of these deadly viruses from laboratories across the world.
