Indirect speech/Reported speech refers to speech being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"I have a Christmas party today." (Direct)

She said that she had a Christmas party that day. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'you' changes to 'I' and many other words will have to be made.

The bird was adamant and she said, “I am doing my bit.” (Direct)

The bird being adamant, said that she was doing her bit. (Indirect)

Hope it helps :)
