Copper vessel gets tarnished due to copper oxide layer formed on its surface. This layer mainly contains black copper oxide and green copper hydroxide. This indicates the formed layer is basic  in nature.Copper oxide is basic in nature..Hence, when we rub tarnished copper vessel with lemon juice or tamarind, the basic copper oxider reacts with acid(citric acid) present in the lemon or tamarind to form a salt which is washed away with water.Hence, the vessel gets cleaned

Explanation:

Tarnished copper vessels are being cleaned with lemon or tamarind because copper vessel forms a basic layer of copper oxide which is greenish in color and it is cleaned by lemon. Lemon is citric acid and have the power to clean copper by dissolving this copper oxide tarnish.
