During the 6th and 7th century, the Turkish introduced the Chinese to Opium for the first time and in subsequent centuries opium addiction increased rapidly.
Taking advantage of this, the British imported large quantities of India grown Opium into China in exchange for Chinese luxury goods such as Tea, Silk and Porcelain, which was a highly sought after in the western countries.
