The capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is Shrinagar, ‘the City of

the Sun’. It lies between the hill of Hari Parbat and the rock of Takht-e-suleman.

It is a city of canals. The Jhelum flows right through the heart of the city. It cuts

Shrinagar into two parts, that are joined together by seven long bridges of

strange design, What a pleasure it is to move down the Jhelum under those

seven bridges in those light, lovely and comfortable boast called shikaras. These

shikaras are of different shapes and sizes.

Near Shrinagar is the famous Dal Lake. One of the most beautiful lakes in

the world. It is eight km. long and four km wide. It is fed by Shrinagar. Its water

is as glass.

On the Dal Lake are the ‘floating garden’ there are many of these floating

gardens, and they can be moved from the part of the lake to another. Tomatoes,

melons and other fruits grow on these floating gardens.

We can also see on the Dal Lake a large number of houseboats, these flatbottomed boats of different sizes and shapes are let our………visitors. They

contain room fully furnished with everything for our comfort. They also carry

servants and kitchens. Life in a houseboats and the lakes and rivers of Jammu

and Kashmir is wonderful. The distant mountains and beautiful scenery are with

us all the time.
