The Causes of the American Revolution
The colonists remained dutiful British citizens from 1607 to 1776. In the latter part of this period, the colonists’ loyalty toward the British king decreased as Enlightenment ideas spread through the colonies. These ideas included the opinion that people had natural rights.
The French and Indian War cost the British government a great deal of money. To regain the costs, the government issued heavy taxes on the colonies. As a result, economic and political conflicts between the colonists and the British government increased.
These conflicts, along with the spread of Enlightenment ideas, encouraged the colonists to seek independence.
