in a diploid organism germ cell divides by meiosis, where the chromosome number become half. All the gametes in diploid organism are formed from meiosis, but they can differ externally due to different needs. For example,a human sperm and a human ovum, both are haploid, but ovum is large, round, food laden and non motile, while a sperm is very small, motie and has no food reserve.
talking about the haploid organisms, they form gametes by mitosis, because there chromosome number is already half.they undergo meiosis after fertilization to maintain their cell ploidy.

In haploid organisms, gametes form by mitosis and diploid organisms do meiosis for the formation of gametes, in haploid organisms meiosis happens to maintain haplontic life cycle it does meiosis after fertilization. So gamete formation is not the same in a different organism.

hope it will be helpful :)
