The cell organelles in which hydrolytic enzymes are stored
Answers
Which organelles in a cell contain hydrolytic enzymes?
Lysosomes are cell organelle that contains hydrolytic enzymes.
Lysosomes are virtually present in all animal cells (except RBCs). Lysosomes are prominent in liver, spleen & renal cells, and cells of immune system- macrophages & polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
Lysosomes are single membrane bound small spherical vesicles (<1µ in diameter) filled with powerful digestive enzymes. The digestive enzymes present in lysosomes are hydrolytic in action and optimally active at acidic pH, hence named ACID HYDROLASES. More than 30 acid hydrolases exit in lysosomes, which digest almost all bio-molecules. The acid hydrolases, present in lysosomes, are responsible for intracellular digestion.
Examples of lysosomal enzymes-
(i) Proteases (collagenase, cathepsins, elastase, etc.),
(ii) Lipases (phospholipases, sphingomyelinase, cerebrosidases, etc.)
(iii) Carbohydrases (acid maltase, beta-galactosidase, hyaluronidase, etc.),
(iv) Nucleases (ribonuclease & deoxyribonuclease),
(v) Acid phosphatase, Sulfatases, etc.
