The character Karuthamma was created by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. She was created as the key character of his novel Chemmeen. Karuthamma is highlighted as the daughter of a low caste Hindu fisherman. Karuthamma falls in love with a Muslim fish trader whom she is unable to marry. She marries a person chosen by her parents and lives her life as a good wife and mother.
The novel was made into a Malayalam movie by the same name with the legendary actress Sheela reprising the role of Karuthamma.
