Lichens are slow growing, long living organisms, occuring in wide variety of places ranging from see shore to Arctic regions of earth. Lichens are formed by close association of two different partners one of which is an algal component and the other is fungal component. Lichens are distributed in wide variety of habitats. They grow on tree trunks, decaying logs, and on soil too. They are sensitive to air pollution and generally do not grow near the city.

Lichens includes symbiotic relationship btween algae & fungi . In these relation both are benefited .
The algal partner is called phycobiont which prepares food were as the fungal partner is called mycoboint which helps in protection..
