The Civil Disobedience Movement was the first mass freedom movement in India in the true sense.

  • It was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi on March 12, 1930, when he started the famous Dandi March and was followed by a large number of Indians.
  • On the 6th of April, the breaking of the salt law marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience movement and it had outraged the feeling of nationalism among people.
  • The salt law had adversely impacted all the sections of the society, especially the poor. So, nearly everyone including shopkeepers, peasants, workers, tribals had joined the movement.
  • Thus, it was the first mass freedom movement in India in the true sense.
