The three tier Panchayati Raj system is a system of governance founded and implemented by the Government of India to look after the administration at the Panchayat level.
The three-tiers of this system are:
1. Village Panchayat or Gram Panchayat
2. Block Panchayat or Block Samiti
3. Zila Panchayat or Zila Parishad.
The Panchayati Raj system was introduced in late 1950s to promote rural self-governance and micromanagement at the village and block levels, which owing to their high growth were becoming hard to manage by a single Nagar Panchayat.
