When a cell placed in a hypotonic solution it becomes turgid and the condition is called turgidity.

Water inside the cell (highest concentration) moves out of the cell (lowest concentration), causing the plant cell to shrink and the plant to wilt. The plant wilts because there is a loss of turgor pressure. The plant cell is said to have become "turgid" i.e. swollen and hard. The pressure inside the cell rises until this internal pressure is equal to the pressure outside.
