Given :  The Connecticut River flows at a rate of 5 km / hour for the length of a popular scenic route.

A cruiser to travels 3 hours with the current to reach a drop-off point, but the return trip against the same current took 8 hours.

To Find :  the speed of the boat without a current

Solution:

the speed of the boat without a current  = x  km/hr

Distance one side =  d km

Speed with current = x + 5 km /hr

Speed against current = x - 5 km/hr

A cruiser to travels 3 hours with the current to reach a drop-off point,

=> d/(x + 5)  = 3

=> d = 3x + 15

return trip against the same current took 8 hours.

=> d/(x - 5)  = 8

=> d = 8x - 40

8x - 40 = 3x + 15

=> 5x = 55

=> x = 11

speed of the boat without a current = 11 km/hr
