Given: The coordinates of the vertices of an isosceles triangle are shown. The x-coordinate of one of the vertices is missing.

To Find : Which expression represents the missing x-coordinate?

Solution:

Draw an altitude from Vertex to base

base is on x  axis

Hence altitude will be parallel to y axis

so coordinate of base point of altitude will be ( k, 0)

where k  is the x coordinate of vertex ,

Altitude from vertex to base in isosceles triangle bisects the base

Hence k = (a + b)/2

so x coordinate of vertex = ( a + b)/2

( a + b)/2  represents the missing x-coordinate
