Answer:

$1.333

Step-by-step explanation:

choose a number, which is LCM of all four, say 6 here..

how much can you purchase

Year 1, $1 per unit; ---- 6/1=6 units

Year 2, $1.5 per unit; -- 6/1.5=4 units

Year 3, $1.2 per unit; -- 6/1.2=5 units

Year 4, $2 per unit. ---- 6/2=3 units...

total units = 6+4+5+3=18 units..

cost incurred = 6*4=24..

avg cost= 24/18=1.333

The average cost of a unit of electricity during 4 year period is $1.333.

The cost of 1 unit of electricity during a 4 year period is given below ;

  • Year 1, $1 per unit
  • Year 2, $1.5 per unit
  • Year 3, $1.2 per unit
  • Year 4, $2 per unit.

If a factory spent equal dollars each year for electricity, what was the average cost of a unit of electricity during the 4 year period.

Let each year the factory were spending $ x.

factory use unit of electricity

for 1st year = x/1 = x units

for 2nd year = x/1.5 = 2x/3 units

for 3rd year = x/1.2 = 5x/6 units

for 4th year = x/2 units

now total units of electricity consumed by the factory = x + 2x/3 + 5x/6 + x/2 = (6x + 4x + 5x + 3x)/6 = 3x units

total cost paid by the factory = x + x + x + x = $ 4x

∴ average cost of electricity = total cost/total units

= 4x/3x = 4/3 = 1.333

Therefore the average cost of a unit of electricity during 4 year period is $1.333.
