let the cost of one chair be x

so cost of table = x+40

it is given that 3 tables and 2 chairs cost rupees 820

therefore 3(x+40) + 2(x)=820

3x+120 +2x =820

5x=700

x=140= cost of one chair

and cost of one table =140+40=180
