Alright. So I don't know how the actual approach is for the answer but I was able to solve the question fairly easily so I'm giving you my approach.

The approach is based on the assumption that the individual prices of a pencil, an eraser, and a sharpener are all integers - x, y, z.

So the first part becomes 3x+5y+7z=49. Since prices are positive, z<7. Putting z=6 doesn't give us the answer, but putting it 5 makes the z part 35. Then we can systematically put y=1 to make it 40 and put x=3 to make LHS 49.

Does this satisfy the second part? It does, you can check it. So x=3, y=1, z=5. Which makes the answer 3+1+5=9.

Pretty sketchy approach. Huh? It's just trial and error.
