The bacterial blight disease is the most destructive diseases of cowpeas. It is caused by bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vignicola. It occurs in humid and moderate subtropical climates. the residue of crop and seeds are the main source of cause of diseases due to this infection as well as insects and wind driven rain also involve in spread of infection.

This disease can be control by cultural practices such as intercropping cowpea with maize or cassava and cultivating disease free seed.
