The data on a floppy disk is recorded in rings called tracks. It is the concentric ring of data on a side of a disk. A floppy disk is just like a cassette tape. The disk is made from a thin piece of plastic.

This thin plastic is covered with a magnetic material on both sides and this magnetic material coated plastic is formed as a disk, not like a ribbon. The tracks of the floppy disk are arranged in concentric rings.

The prime reason to arrange the tracks in this way is to easy transition of the software from "file 1" to "file 19". A floppy disk is cost-effective, user-friendly and the disk can be reused as the data on the disk can be erased without a hassle.
