the denominator of a fraction is 3 more than the numerator. if 3 is subtracted from the numerator and 2 is added to the denominator the result is 1/5. find the fraction.

Solution :
let the numerator be x
and denominator be y

given that
y = 3 + x. cond 1

also given that

(x-3)/(y+2) = 1/5

5x-15 = y+2
5x - 15 = 3 + x +2. ( from cond 1)

4x = 20
x = 5
y = 8

so the fraction is 5/8
