DANGER!

Density of ice = 917 kg/ m³

Density of fresh water = 1000 kg/m³

Suppose v is volume of ice above water and V be total volume.

Then volume displaced = V-v,

By law of floatation:

V×917×g = (V-v) ×1000×g

by this;

v/V = 83/1000 = 0.083

This is our answer!

Q :- The density of ice is 917 kg/ m³. What fraction of the volume of a piece of ice will be above water, when floating in fresh water ?

A :-

The block of ice that is placed on water has a density of 917 kg/m^3. The density of water is 1000 kg/m^3. If a fraction f of the volume V of the ice block is submerged in the water, f*V*1000*9.8 = (1 - f)*V*917*9.8

Then , f = 917 / 1000 = 0.917
The fraction of the block that is above the water is , 1 - 0.917 = 0.083.

•°• The fraction of the ice block that floats above the water level is 0.083
