The diagonal of a rectangular field is 60 metres more than the shorter side. If the longer side is 30 metres more than the shorter side, find the sides of the field.

Answer:

Let the length of the shorter side be x m....

Then the diagonal is ( x + 60 ) m and longer side is ( x + 30 ) m.........

By Pythagoras theorem...we know that......

x² + (x+30)² = (x+60)²

=> x²+x²+900+60x = x²+3600+120x

=> x² - 60x - 2700

=> x² + 30x - 90x - 2700

=> x(x+30) -90(x+30)

=> (x-90) (x+30)

Therefore x = +90 and x = -30

As the length can't be negative.....

Hence the length of the sides are...

shorter = 90m

longer = 120m

diagonal = 150m

This is your required answer.....
