The diagram shows a piece of equipment that can be used to investigate the effect of heat on a metal.
The ball will pass through the ring when it is cold.
When the ball is heated it will no longer pass through the ring.
Answer the following questions about this investigation.
(i) Explain why the ball does not pass through the ring when it is heated. (II) How would you get the ball to fit through again?
(III) What does this investigation tell us about the effect of heat on metals?

Answer:
(I) The ball does not pass on heating because when a metal is heated it expands thus increasing in lenth Or in diameter
(ii) When the ball is cooled down it contracts and returns in it's original shape
(iii) It tells that metals expands on heating

Answer:
1) the ball does not pass through the ring when it is heated because solids expand when heated.
2) the best way to get the ball to fit throwgh the ring would be to let it cool down. while cooling the ball will come back to its original size.
3) this investigation tells us metals conduct heat and heating metals will result in them expanding, but when cooled they will come back to its original size.
