then the other number is x-8

x + 2 = 3(x-8)

x +2 = 3x - 24

3x - x - 24 - 2 = 0

2x - 26 = 0

2x = 26

x = 26/2 = 13

x-8= 13 - 8 = 5

bigger number = x= 13

smaller number = x-8 = 5
