Let the first no. be x
it's square is
 {x}^{2}
next no. is x+1
it's square is
 ({x + 1})^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  + 1 + 2x
their difference is 31
 {x}^{2}  + 1 + 2x -  {x}^{2}  = 31 \\  2x + 1 = 31 \\ 2x = 30 \\ x = 15
The two consecutive numbers are : -
x = 15 \\ x + 1 = 16
