let the numbers be x and y

Then,

x-y=5 first equation

x/y=4/9 second equation

=)9x=4y

=)x=4y/9

now putting value of x in first equation

(4y/9)-y=5

-5y/9=5

-5y=45

y=-9

x=4y/9

x=4×(-9)/9

x=4×-1

x=-4

The numbers are -4 and -9.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let one number is x and other number is y.

Given:

The difference of two numbers is 5 and their quotient is 4/9.

 =  > \: x - y = 5

And

 =  >  \:  \frac{x}{y}  =  \frac{4}{9}

 =  >  \: x =  \frac{4y}{9}

Now put the value of x in difference equation,

 =  >  \:  \frac{4y}{9}   - y = 5

 =  >  \:  \frac{4y - 9y}{9}  = 5

 =  >   \: \frac{ - 5y}{9}  = 5

 =  >  \: y =  - 9

Now,putting value of y in x equation

 =  >  \: x =  \frac{4 \times  - 9}{9}

 =  >  \: x =  - 4

The numbers are -4 and -9.
