Concept

Subtraction and Division are the two basic mathematical operations, one is used for subtracting while other is used for division.

For example.

Numbers are 4 and 2

Subtraction = 4-2 = 2

Division = 4/2 = 2

Given

1) Difference of two positive numbers is 72

2) Quotient obtained on dividig one by the other is 4

Find

Value of the numbers

Solution

Let the numbers be x and y

We are given that Difference of x and y is 72

x - y = 72

x = y + 72

Another statement is also given that x/y = 44

x/y = 4

y+72/y= 4

y+72 = 4y

3y = 72

y = 24

Value of one number is 24

Calulating value of x

x =  y + 72

x = 24 + 72

x = 96

The numbers are 96 and 24 whose difference is 72 and the quotient obtained by dividing one by other is 4.

Answer:

96 and 72 are the value of x and y

Step-by-step explanation:

Explanation:

The difference between two positive numbers = 72

And the quotient obtained by dividing the one by the other = 4.

Let x and y be the two positive numbers.

Step 1:

So, the difference between two positive numbers = 72

⇒ x - y = 72

⇒ x = 72 + y ..........(i)

Now, from the question, on dividing x by y we get 4 as quotient.

\frac{x}{y} = 4 ...........(ii)

On putting the value of x = 72 +y in (ii)

\frac{72 + y }{y} = 4

⇒ 72 + y = 4y

⇒ 72 = 4y - y = 3y

y = \frac{72}{3} = 24

Step 1:

Now, we putting the value of y = 24 in (i)

x = 72 + y

⇒ x = 72 + 24 = 96

Final answer:

Hence, 96 and 72 are the value of x and y.
