So, let the second number be 86 - x

Given, their difference = 18

86 - x - x = 18

86 - 2x = 18

86 - 18 = 2x

2x = 68

x = $\dfrac{68}{2}$

x = 34



1st number => x => 34

2nd number => 86 - x => 86 - 34 => 52
