The electric field due to a negative chargepoints radially in from all directions(because a positive test charge placed near it would feel a force pointing toward it). In general, electric field lines always point from positive charges and toward negative charges.

The direction of the field is taken to be the direction of the force it would exert on apositive test charge. The electric field is radially outward from a positive charge and radially in toward a negative point charge.
