'The discontent of the sepoys played a major role in the Revolt of 1857. Explain by mentioning the social values neglected by Britishers.
Answers
Answer:
The social values neglected by the British were:
1. They asked the Indian soldiers to travel overseas, but due to this the sepoys lose their religion.
2. The cartridges were coated with the fat of cows and pigs and to open the cartridges the sepoys have to bite them which violated the religion.
3. The British also intervened in social practices like sati, untouchability, child marriage etc.
Some other reasons are:
1. The European soldiers were given high salaries, servants and mansions to live in whereas the Indian sepoys were paid low wages and were also not provided other facilities.
2. The British also passed the sedition act under which an Indian could be jailed without trial in the court.
3. The British now started to educate the natives in English instead of sanskrit and their other local languages
4. They demanded high taxes from peasants and farmers which led to deserting villages and starvation.
The above are the reasons which led to the revolt of 1857.
