Caesium chloride (CsCl) forms a body centered cubic unit cell wherein one of the atoms (either Cs or Cl) lies at all the 8 corners of the cube, and the other one lies at the body center. So, the nearest neighbours would be an atom at the corner and the one at the body center. The distance between them would be equal to half the length of the diagonal of the cube, that is (√3)/2 times the side length of the unit cell.

The distance between the nearest neighbours in cesium chloride crystal will be \bold{\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}}.

Explanation:

  • In case of caesium chloride crystals one type of atom will be present in the edges of the cube and the other type of atom will be present in the centre of the body of the cube.
  • This type of cubic pattern between two ions is known as body centric cubic packing.
  • In this case the distance between the two atoms of different types is half the diagonal of the cube formed.
  • Since the diagonal is equal to root 3 of the length of the cube according to Pythagoras theorem hence the answer will be root 3 by 2.
