Answer:

Distance between both stations= 300 km

Speed of 1st motorist= x

Speed of 2nd motorist= x+20

Distance covered by 1st motorist after 2 hours

= 2x (distance= time×speed)

Distance covered by 2nd motorist

= 2(x+20) (distance= time×speed)

= 2x+40

Distance between both bikes after 2 hours

= 20 km

So now if we add all the three distances, our sum will be 300.

⇒ 2x+(2x+40)+20= 300

4x+60=300

4x= 300-60

4x= 240

x= 240/4

x= 60

Speed of 1st motorist= 60 km/h

Speed of 2nd motorist= 80 km/h (x+20)

Distance travelled by 1st motorist

= 2(60)

= 120 km

Distance travelled by 2nd motorist

= 2(80)

= 160 km

VERIFY:

To verify, we will first read the question again. It says that after 2 hours, the distance left between the two motorists is only 20 km. So, equation formed:

20= 300-(distance₁+distance₂)

20= 300-(120+160)

20= 300-280

20=20

LHS=RHS

Hence, verified

NOTE:-

distance₁= distance travelled by first motorist

distance₂= distance travelled by second motorist

Hope it helps
