The distance to swim to the other side of the lake is 8 km. Susie swam half the distance across the lake and then turned back and swam 2,000 m to join her sister. Once with her sister, both girls swam the rest of the way to the other side of the lake. What is the total distance that Susie swam?

For going and coming back Susie swam=2(2000)=4000m or 4 km
The distance swam by both of them =8km
