Answer:

Have you ever heard someone whisper a secret message to someone and wonder just what it meant? Well, you are in for a treat in Chapter 2 titled 'The Mail'. Chapter 2 of Book 1 of A Tale of Two Cities describes a mysterious scene late at night full of secret messages. And it also introduces us to the important character of Jarvis Lorry.

When this chapter opens, it's late at night. A Friday night in November, to be precise. A mail coach is traveling down the Dover Road. As the name implies, a mail coach is a horse-drawn coach that carries mail, but also carries passengers. Remember, we're in 1757, so there are no Ubers available… or cars, for that matter.

Well, the coach is supposed to be carrying passengers, but right now the passengers and the coachman are walking alongside the coach because it's been bogged down in the mud. Which means the passengers are walking in the mud too. And it's a November night in England, so it is cold and foggy. Not surprisingly, no one is in too pleasant of a mood.
