The driver of the train travelling at 40m/s applies the brakes as the train enters a station. The train slows down at a rate of 2m/s^2.The platform is 400 m long.Will the train stop in time?

Given parameters:  

Initial velocity(u) of the train= 40m/s  

Final velocity(v) of the train= 0m/s

Retardation(a) = -2m/s2

  Distance(s) = (v2-u2)/2a  = (0- 402) / (2x -2)

    =( -1600)/ ( -4 )

   =   400m

Hence the train will stop after covering a distance of 400m.

Since the length of the platform is also 400m, it can be concluded that:

Yes, the train will stop in time.
