The duration interphase is higher than M - phase - what is the reason?
Answers
During the mitotic phase, the DNA is divided into two sets and then cytoplasm is divided (cytokinesis) and forms two new cells. M phase consists of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.Cell spends most of its life in interphase and in interphase, G1 or first gap phase is the longest phase of cell cycle.
Typically, the amount of time required for a single cell cycle in actively proliferating human cells in culture is 24 hours. Of these, the M phase takes approximately one hour to complete and interphase takes up the remaining 23 hours.

Stages of Cell Cycle
I = Interphase, M = Mitosis; inner ring: M = Mitosis, G1 = Gap 1, G2 = Gap 2, S = Synthesis; not in ring: G0 = Gap 0/Resting.

A cell splits after completing a sequence of events. For example, a cell grows, replicate its DNA (genetic material), and then finally divides into two daughter cells. The cell cycle is termed a cycle because the events repeat itself. After completing one complete round the newly formed daughter cells begin the same process all over again. The two key phases of a cell cycle are interphase and M phase or the mitotic phase.
