The effective resistance between a and b is 10 ohm.

Given - Two resistances

Find - Effective resistance

Solution - As per the placement of resistors in wire, the current from 4 ohm resistor will move forward towards B point. If the resistor would have been placed opposite to 6 ohm, the two resistors would have been connected in parallel. Accordingly effective resistance would have been calculated. This effective resistance would have been added with 4 ohm to find overall effective resistance between a and b.

In absence of any other resistor, the 4 ohm resistor and 6 ohm resistor will be considered in series. Thus, to calculate effective resistance, we will simply add the two resistances.

Effective Resistance = 4 + 6

Effective resistance = 10 ohm

Hence, the effective resistance is 10 ohm.
