The electronic configuration of X as 2,8,6 is

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4

The element belongs to the oxygen family ( group 16) on the basis of valence shell electronic configuration and as the last electrons are in the n=3 shell so we say it is from 3rd-period of the periodic table.

It has 2 electrons less to become a noble gas configuration so it has the tendency to gain 2 electrons and show valency as (-2)

The element is sulphur has atomic number 16.
