electronic configuration of chlorine=2,8,7

Lithium donates one electron to attain the noble gas(helium) configuration. At same time chlorine needs one electron to attain noble gas(argon) configuration. Chlorine pulls one electron from lithium. And both the elements become stable.

It is a ionic bonds because transfering of electrons take place between chlorine and lithium
