Answer:

a. out of elements X,Y and Z the element Y (of group 14) and element Z (of group 16) are non metals. Thus, the elements Y an Z will form covalent bonds.

Explanation:

b. the elements X and Z will form an ionic bond. Please note that though the element Y belonging to group 14 is also non-metal (like carbon) but it usually does not form ionic bonds.

Answer:

  • Atomic bonds are classified into two types: ionic bonds and covalent bonds.

Covalent Bonding:-

  • Covalent bonding is a type of chemical bonding between two atoms that is distinguished by the sharing of electron pairs between the two atoms.
  • A covalent bond is created when two nonmetals with identical electronegativities come into contact.
  • Neither atom is "strong" enough to draw electrons from the other.
  • They exchange their outer molecular orbit electrons with each other to stabilize themselves.

Ionic Bonding:-

  • Complete electron transfer from one atom to another results in the formation of an ionic bond.
  • When an atom loses one or more electrons, it changes into a cation, a positively charged ion.
  • When an atom gains one or more electrons, it forms an anion—a negatively charged ion.
  • It is a type of linkage created by the electrostatic attraction between ions in a chemical molecule that have opposing charges.
  • An ionic bond is established when a metal and a nonmetal comes in contact.
  • Since non-metals (-ve ion) are "stronger" than metals (+ve ion), they may easily obtain electrons from metals.

Now as per the question,

  • The element x belongs to the group 2 i.e,. Alkaline Earth Metal.
  • The element y belongs to the group 14 i.e,. Carbon group. There are two metalloids in this group: silicon and germanium. The other elements in this group are metals, but carbon is a nonmetal.
  • The element z belongs to the group 16 i.e,. Chalcogens (Non-metal)
  1. Now, out of the above given elements, the element x (of group 2) is a metal and element z (of group 16) is a non-metal. Thus, the elements x and z will form an ionic bond.
  2. The element y (group 14) can be either metal and non-metal. Hence, it can either form covalent bond with element z or can form ionic bond with element x.
